Social media can be a mixed bag when it comes to what is promoted versus not. Still, one narrative I’m happy to see gain reach in recent years is that the holidays aren’t 100% happy for everyone. They can highlight rifts and painful losses, which can be heavy and isolating for the Black trans community. Connotations of homecoming can be painful if you don’t feel you have a home, literally or figuratively. That acknowledgment feels essential to show us that we are, in fact, not alone. Being seen and feeling understood is a critical part of being human, but of particular significance for us.
It’s one reason I am proud of my Marsha P. Johnson Institute team for compiling our MPJI Resource List, a new web-based guide to Black trans-friendly resources across the U.S. As we close out 2022, we are happy to announce we have resources for all 50 United States. We wanted our trans and gender non-conforming (TGNC) siblings to be able to find local resources, from employment and legal care to TGNC-friendly physicians and TGNC-owned businesses, particularly in states where anti-trans rhetoric and accompanying legislation are creating harm.
