Honoring Our Legacy
Embracing Our Future
The Marsha P. Johnson Institute has been about evolution. From the very beginning, our mission has been clear: protect and defend the human rights of BLACK transgender people while building a sanctuary rooted in joy, resilience, and unapologetic truth.
Today, we mark a powerful new chapter in that journey.
A LEGACY OF VISION AND POWER
Founded by Elle Moxley, MPJI was built from the ground up as a home for BLACK trans people to be safe, celebrated, and free. Elle’s tireless leadership shaped MPJI into a cultural force, shifting narratives, touching lives, and building a movement of protection and joy. After years of trailblazing service, Elle has transitioned from her Executive Director role. We honor her vision, her leadership, and her endless dedication. Her rest is well deserved, and her legacy will continue to guide us.
WELCOMING NEW LEADERSHIP

The Board of Directors is proud to welcome Chastity Bowick as MPJI’s Interim Executive Director. Chastity is a fierce advocate and trusted leader, with deep roots in the struggle for justice. She has dedicated her life to ensuring our community has the resources and power needed to thrive. With her clarity, courage, and vision, MPJI enters this next chapter grounded, steady, and strong.
A Moment of Growth
This leadership transition comes at a milestone moment: MPJI is now officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This recognition strengthens our foundation, ensures your contributions are tax-deductible, and positions us to expand our impact where it is most urgently needed.
With your support, MPJI will continue to:
- Provide direct aid and resources to BLACK trans people in need.
- Sustain and grow programs and staff capacity.
- Advocate for systemic change at every level.
Carrying the Torch Forward
The torch has been passed, but the flame burns brighter than ever. MPJI remains unapologetic in our fight and unwavering in our commitment to unity, community, and radical love.
This is not just a transition in leadership, it is a revival of love, legacy, and power. Together, we will continue to honor our past while building the future we deserve.
